Getting Serious

Time to get Serious

Hey, Ertia here. Sorry, I'm gonna get serious on you for a minute.

Jaynesbunk gets about 20 hits a day, not much, and I got thinking, I really should do something more here than play with Jayne. Preacher used to tell him, "If you can't do something smart, do something right." We're about to do something right.

This months topic is child pornography on the Internet.

I just read an MSNB article today that says we're losing the fight against child pornography on the Internet- that many American citizens don't believe it really exists, that it's just actors pretending to be children.

That such an attitude exists surprised me to say the least. Sure, there's Japanese kiddie-porn with grown girls in pigtails and school-skirts, but there's also film and pictures circulating the internet of little children being abused. As long as hide our heads in the sand, innocent children are going to continue being hurt. I think some of us don't want to think about it because it's horrible, it makes us sick to our stomachs, or maybe it brings up painful memories of our own childhoods that we'd rather forget about. But the fact remains that unless we, as a society of Internet users begin to take note, these pedophiles will continue to operate, spreading images via email, websites, and blogs.

I was also dismayed to find alot of websites willfully diseminating misleading information regarding child pornography! Child pornography is NOT children finding porn on the Internet. For petes sake, we all KNOW the Internet is for Porn, and we need to protect our children as best we can, but if you're 16 year old son is downloading naked chicks, that is NOT child pornography. Child pornography is usage of children in the creation of sexually explicit materials. It is a five year old performing oral sex, or an eight year old boy being anally violated. It's young girls in sexually provocative poses, and little boys being sexually stimulated in front of a camera. Disgusting images, I know, but they are out there. And when we talk about Internet child pornography, THAT is what we're talking about. Not a couple teen-agers on MySpace sharing pictures of their scanned genitalia. There's some attitude about well, 'it's not my kid in those pictures, my kid is safe in his room'. I ask you to think about who's child that is. Was she kidnapped off the street? Or maybe her dad has custody on weekends, and thinks it's good for her? It doesn't matter. That child is still a child, and they deserve love and care, and a chance at a normal life. So, please, I'm begging you, check out the links below, and see if you can help.

So, what am I asking?

Just that we don't continue to hide our heads in the sand and pretend there isn't a problem. Here are some great links for education on the topic and for reporting incidences that you might run across.

Wired Safety - Report, educate and promote!
CyberAngels: Educate and volunteer. Great Resources for Parents!

The FBI Site: Good Educational resources, as well as comprehensive information on the direction the FBI has taken in stopping child pornography.

GOOD NEWS!! A crackdown is being made on children's modeling sites that show children in provocation sexual positions and outfits!
